Our approach is to live, work and breathe food!

Food is our passion sitting at the heart of everything we do. We ensure the quality and variety of our ingredients and use local produce. Creating new food concepts is by far the most enjoyable part of running a food company…and, indeed, living!

Bespoke corporate catering menus using fresh seasonal ingredients.

Food quality and provenance is of such importance to us and our customers. Today’s customers are far more foodie than ever before. They are aware of new trends and ingredients and are conscious of where their food came from. Never before have our customer’s palates been more discerning.

All our menus are based on homemade food. They are made from scratch, using quality ingredients. Seasonal menus are the norm. UK produce is used wherever possible. With such great ingredients farmed within the UK it would be criminal not to!

We give our chefs the autonomy to create their own weekly menus, every week.

This enables them to take advantage of supplier offers and seasonality. Creativity is encouraged, not stifled. We want our chefs to be motivated and inspired every day, so that they deliver their best to you, our clients, and to our customers.

Lucy-Ann Prideaux, our company nutritionist, advises and implements new nutritionally balanced or biased concepts. Our latest implementation is food combining to maximise nutritional qualities. She also runs nutritional workshops for our chefs. Educating them in healthier ways to cook, for example using less salt, butter and cream.

We guarantee an unrivalled food offer throughout your catering facilities…

Food Provenance

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers.

It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities that have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work.

We sell many Fairtrade products in Deli 5, from juice to fruit, confectionary and coffee. The ethos of Grumpy Mule (coffee) is that they will never short-change their growers, so ensure that all of their coffee beans are sourced from Fairtrade suppliers.

“The quality of our coffees – and the special flavours that makes our mule go giddy with excitement – depend on the quality of our growers, so we work alongside them, building relationships, and investing in local communities from the mountains of Panama to the highlands of Sumatra”.

Healthier Catering Commitment

Supported by the Mayor of London, The Healthier Catering Commitment for London is a scheme run by the London Boroughs that recognises those businesses in London that demonstrate a commitment to reducing the level of saturated fat and salt in the food sold, to offer some healthy options (for example, lower sugar drinks and snacks) and to make smaller portions available on request. We are delighted to have achieved this award last year.

Rain Forest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-governmental organization working to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour. We source many Rainforest Alliance accredited beverages, such as Naked Juice, Innocent drinks, Lipton drinks and our new Grumpy Mule Coffee also has the Rainforest Alliance stamp.

RSPCA Assured

RSPCA Assured, previously Freedom Food is the RSPCA’s ethical food label dedicated to farm animal welfare. Their vision is for all farm animals to have a good life and be treated with compassion and respect.

The RSPCA Assured label makes it easy to recognise products from animals that have had a better life so you can feel good about choices. If there’s an RSPCA Assured label on the packaging of eggs, fish and meat that you buy, you know the farms – and everyone else involved in the animals’ lives – have been assessed and meet RSPCA animal welfare standards.

As we provide the catering services at the RSPCA and RSPCA Assured Head Office, we were delighted to have gained this accreditation following stringent assessments.

Red Tractor

Red Tractor is the minimum standard for all Talkington Bates ingredients.

The Red Tractor logo confirms that independent assessors have checked food or drink meets the comprehensive standards, from farms to fork. These standards cover the following:

The flag in the Red Tractor logo tells you where the food has been farmed, processed and packed. To follow this traceability trail, all users have to keep comprehensive records of their livestock and crops.

Food Safety and Hygiene

Food given to Red Tractor animals on the farm is safe for them to eat, so there is no risk of contamination to the meat and milk produced. Red Tractor dairy farmers have to meet strict standards of hygiene; from the way they milk the cows to how they store the milk for collection. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, the standards ensure that water used for irrigation and washing is clean and that workers follow the best standards of hygiene, even when working in the fields.

Animal Welfare

It is important that farmers protect the health and welfare of animals. The standards make sure that farmers are competent to look after animals, understand their needs and that the animal’s health and welfare is regularly checked. The Red Tractor logo means that animals have adequate space, and safe and comfortable housing or shelter.

Just like you, animals need a nutritious diet to stay healthy. The standards require that all animals have unlimited access to fresh, clean drinking water and are provided with well balanced meals. All farmers who keep livestock must keep a written health plan and medicine records so that they can monitor the health of their animals and prevent them from becoming unwell. It also helps the farmer to know when he needs to call the vet.

Environmental Protection

Farmers under the Red Tractor scheme must use responsible farming methods to minimise pollution. This means making sure that pesticide and fertilisers are stored safely and are applied correctly to the crop. To protect the environment, crop farmers and fruit and veg growers have to minimise the impact their farming practices have on wildlife, fauna and flora.
